South Korea ferry with 476 passengers sinks; 2 dead

100+ people were still unaccounted on Wednesday several hrs after a ferry carrying 476, most of them high school students, sank in cold waters off South Korea's southern coast, killing at least two and injuring 14.

There were fears of a big jump in the number of deaths, as dozens of boats, helicopters and divers scrambled to rescue passengers, who had been on the ferry travelling to the southern island of Jeju.
One rescued passenger said. he believed that many people had been trapped inside the ferry when it sank.

Laxmi Narayan Tripathi says thanks as SC recognises transgenders as third gender

Live and Let Live!! Congrats to Laxmi and his team :) A bench of two Justices K.S. Radhakrishnan and A.K. Sikri directed the government to take steps for granting recognition to transgenders as a separate third category of gender after male and female. The Supreme Court on Tuesday recognised transgenders or eunuchs as third category of gender and directed Centre and States to grant them all facilities, including voters ID, passport and driving licence. The Centre and States were also directed to take steps for bringing the community into the mainstream by providing adequate healthcare, education and employment. 20 hrs gunbattle killed two suspected LeT militants

The encounter at Ahmadnagar locality of Buchpora ended with the killing of both the militants holed up in a residential house. He said charred bodies of both the militants were recovered along with two AK rifles and some ammunition from the house which had caught fire. The officer said the slain ultras were believed to be members of LeT and efforts were on to establish their identity. The gunbattle had started last evening when police, assisted by security forces, launched a search operation following specific information about presence of militants in the house. A policeman was injured in the initial gunbattle but the operation to neutralise the militants was suspended to ensure safety of civilians, including a couple in whose house the militants had taken shelter.

Expect real attacks after election says Kejriwal

Speaking at a book release function, Mr. Kejriwal said he and some of his associates have till now been subjected to slaps, kicks and egg attacks during the LS election campaign. I feel nothing major will happen until the elections get over because otherwise these might boomerang.

Lyricist and film director Gulzar to receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Sampooran Singh Kalra (born 18 August 1934), known popularly by his pen name Gulzar, is an Indian poet, lyricist and film director. The Government on Saturday decided to give the 45th Dada Saheb Phalke Award to veteran film lyricist and director Gulzar for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. The award includes a Swarn Kamal (golden lotus), cash component of Rs. 10 lakhs and a shawl. Gulzar was selected for the award by a committee of eminent persons set up by the Government. He was the unanimous choice of the seven-member jury.


Maoists strike in Chhattisgarh, 15 killed

Naxals attacked the polling team near Ketulnar village under Kutru police station limits of Bijapur at about 11 am when it was returning after voting in the region, leaving seven polling personnel dead and five injured. Polling was held in Naxal-affected Bastar constituency on 10th April. When the election team reached near a pond in Ketulnar village between Gudma and Kutru, Naxals triggered a landmine blast and opened indiscriminate firing.

LS polls: Modi in Chennai to address rally today

Gujarat Chief Minister will address a public rally here for the south Chennai constituency, being fought by La Ganesan. He will come back to the state on April 16 and 17, and will tentatively tour various constituencies including Erode, Coimbatore and Krishnagiri where he will speak in support of his party candidates.
